All SAINTS DAY – NOVEMBER 5th
Source: Sundaysandseasons.com
By virtue of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are made saints while we are still sinners. Every day in this nautically juxtaposed life we navigate through rough waters such as sin, evil, pain, heartache, addiction, abuse, hunger, disease, and war. But our bearing is always set, not by the North Star but by the Daystar, who has been the heading for the faithful of every generation. With the scriptures as our compass and the confessions our map, we sail as a part of the great flotilla of saints on the waters of baptism, with the wind of the Spirit at our backs, always pointed in the direction of our guiding Daystar.
Today we give thanks for the saints who have gone before us, for the saints still among us, and for the saints of God still to come. We give thanks for the examples of faithful living that the saints have given us as they navigated the stormy waters of life, and also for the faithful acts of service we are empowered by God’s Holy Spirit to do in our own seas. We give thanks, too, for the fullness of eternal life in which the saints of God who have gone before us now partake and which we have yet to fully enjoy.
People we are remembering this year:
Rev. Bruce Gelhorn, Sandra Graham, Don Janzen, Rick Jorek, Dorothy Knoll, Roy Meakings, Paul Moroz, Donna Olson, Bruno Roloff, Doreen Seaford, Don Spitzer, Cathy Sterdan, Edward Streilein
TRANSIT PLUS (Did you know?)
Those of you with longer memories might remember when Handi Transit stopped coming to St. Luke’s Zion (and all other locations that were not on a bus route). These days, Handi Transit has morphed into Transit Plus, which now goes anywhere within the city limits. This change in policy is because there are now several areas in the city with no bus service. Thus, those who qualify for Transit Plus can arrange for transportation to the church for worship and for other events.

LUTHERAN URBAN MINISTRY:
October 2023 News from your Ministry Manager
Happy Thanksgiving! Even with all of the trials and tribulations of life there are always so many things to be grateful for.
The autumn leaves have been so beautiful and are falling fast! That fall chill in the air has started - and it won’t be long and we’ll be telling each other to be careful on icy sidewalks!
We have a lot of camaraderie on the church sidewalk during our bagged meal distributions – no matter the season or the temperature!
Food insecurity is such a worry for so many people. Harvest Manitoba use is up 150% across the province, rents keep going up, and heating bills are increasing for those who rent and pay for their heat separately from their rent. Safe, affordable and well-maintained housing for rent is often difficult to find. There is also a huge worry too for homeowners everywhere looking at rising heating costs and also for those who have mortgages up for renewal soon.
Anxiety was the topic in our Mental Wellness Sharing Circles in the first week of October. with facilitators from the Canadian Mental Health Association Manitoba/Winnipeg are taking place the first week of each month on Wednesdays at our Men’s Lunch/Sharing Circle and our Women’s Sharing Circle, and also at our Thursday Co-ed Sharing Circles – from September 2023 to April 2024. Good information and terrific discussions in all three circles. The topic for the first week of November is Depression. Mental wellness topics are applicable for all walks of life. Also, great conversations and topics in the other circles during the month including “how is your week going”?
