MITTEN BASKET:

We did have some knitted hats & mitts that were taken to Champlain William Write and King Edward Schools in November. Hopefully we will be able to continue this project in future years. Thank you to all who provided items for the schools.

Thanks goes out to everyone who donated new touques, mitts, gloves & scarves for the people who come to the Urban Mission. These items were placed in many of the 126 gift bags that were distributed at Christmas.

In 2022 many items like winter coats, boots, shoes, blankets, quilts, toiletries & food were also donated and taken to the Urban Mission. Thank you to Dennis and Don who deliver these items on Wednesday mornings.

This year we will also be asking for donations of lighter coats and shoes that would be appropriate for springtime. If anyone is cleaning out their closets, please put the items in the boxes for the Urban Mission.

Thanks again, as we serve the people in our community.

LUM (LUTHERAN URBAN MINISTRY:

February 2023 News from your Ministry Manager

BRRR…...We are so grateful for all of the winter jackets, boots and hoodies donated. Sometimes a person will ask if we have winter items, but we might also notice the condition of the boots (or that shoes are worn in the bitter cold) or an inadequate jacket and we’ll say, “hold on, I think we’ve got a pair of boots, a jacket, etc. that will fit you”. Often people are a bit shy to ask.

Urban Lutheran Ministry Sunday Worship: As pandemic worries have lessened, we are so happy to have resumed our Sunday worship services, as of January 15. The door opens at 1:00 and the worship service is from 1:30 – 2:15.

• Communion is included in every worship service. I bake bannock for the communion bread.

• We have a prayer bucket with paper and pencils. Prayers written down and dropped into the bucket are read during the prayers of the church. The prayers written by our Urban community are for family members, friends, and often for the community/world at large.

• The two low children’s tables and little chairs have been filled with children busily colouring during the service and the low background chatter of little children is music to our ears.

• We are still requiring masks to be worn but anticipate that requirement will be ending soon and coffee/tea will be served in the half hour before our worship service.

• Those attending the worship service receive their bagged lunch when leaving at 2:15. Bagged lunches are distributed at the side door on Sunday between 1:00 and 2:00 for those not coming in for the service.

Men’s Lunch/Sharing Circle: In mid-March 2020 we had pivoted to a bagged lunch distributed at the side door. • On Wednesday, February 22, we are so happy to resume the Men’s Lunch/Sharing Circle downstairs from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

Women’s Sharing Circle: Resumed on Wednesday, February 8 from 2:00 – 2:30 p.m. • So wonderful to sit together again and it seems like such a long time now since the pandemic began and we suspended our circles. We all talked about life in the past three years!

We plan to resume the Thursday Co-ed Sharing Circles sometime in March. A women’s drop-in following the Wednesday Women’s Sharing Circle is also in the planning stages - after school so that children can attend with them and be busy with arts and crafts while the women drink coffee and tea….and visit together.

As our worship services have resumed and sharing circles are once again starting up, bagged meal distribution will continue outside the side door on Wednesdays and Thursdays (and Sundays) at the times listed on the door.

Please keep our vulnerable Lutheran Urban Ministry community in your prayers. Please contact me: rhonda@theurban.ca for additional information, or to have your meal team added to the calendar.

Kind regards,

Rhonda G.;

Ministry Manager, Lutheran Urban Ministry Corp.
