Reformation Sunday
Sunday, October 28th, 2018click here for past entriesThera, Breazy and Ashley – we are delighted today that you have chosen to say “yes.” You have investigated what is in the Bible and what we believe as Lutherans and as Christians and have said, “Yes. I want to continue in the covenant that God made with me in baptism.” That is no little thing, and God is delighted as well.
When each of you were baptized, you were pretty little. Yet, even before your baptism, God knew you. As the Psalm reminds us today, God knit you together in your mother’s womb and wove all your parts together to make you the young women you are today (Ps. 139:13-15). God knew you and God loved you, and God continues to love you through Jesus. Sometimes, though, it can be hard for us to believe that.
At the time of the Reformation, which we also remember today, church leaders were teaching that only if you do this and this and this and buy this – only then will you be acceptable to God. People were buying it hook, line and sinker. After all, it’s pretty easy for us to believe that we are unacceptable in God’s eyes. However, a monk named Martin Luther and others with him discovered that the Bible teaches differently. We are acceptable to God because of Jesus, through our faith in him. This is at least part of the difference that faith in Jesus makes.
Each of you have also been asked to think about what it means to believe in Jesus and what difference that makes in your lives. I’m going to ask you to come now and share what you wrote.
