We’ve had an environmental assessment of the St Luke’s Zion Church building done as a university project. The resulting report gives some suggestions for us to reduce our carbon footprint. If you have an interest in being on a committee that will meet to discuss possibilities, please let me know.

LUTHERAN URBAN MINISTRY:
September 2024 News from your Ministry Manager
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”
Desmond Tutu School has begun and bullying was our topic of discussion in our Men’s, Women’s, and Co-ed Sharing Circles this first week of September. We talked about the impact of experiencing physical or verbal bullying. Lots of memories were shared about personal experiences or knowing those endured by a friend or family member. A few in the circles talked about being bullies themselves when they were young and how they feel about it now.
Online bullying is a relatively new phenomenon and we talked about how self-esteem can be affected in the teenagers today..
Bullying occurs around the world - on the playground, in the classroom, the locker room, the workplace, the military, within the family structure, or from a neighbour, to name a few examples. The memories of being made to feel “insignificant” or “powerless” can remain in the memory of an individual well into their senior years – often like little one-minute YouTube videos.
A pat answer to address all circumstances isn’t possible. Walking away, or standing firm, or telling someone about it are some various possibilities to sometimes complex situations. A school slogan this year in Winnipeg schools is “Be kind and never mind” and that can be a possible response!
