SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
We’ve had an environmental assessment of the St Luke’s Zion Church building done as a university project. The resulting report gives some suggestions for us to reduce our carbon footprint. If you have an interest in being on a committee that will meet to discuss possibilities, please let me know.

LUTHERAN URBAN MINISTRY:
May 2024 News from your Ministry Manager
Food insecurity is a constant source of stress in these times for those who struggle with trying to make ends meet with a low income, or attempting to make ends meet on EI or EIA Disability, for newcomers to Canada, and for those suddenly unemployed. Housing insecurity is so often mentioned in sharing circles, or in conversations with me. Rising inner-city rent prices and few options for a “decent place to rent” create worry and a feeling of helplessness. Moving further from the inner-city often creates much loneliness, along with the inability to pay for transportation to visit family and friends.
• Also, at any given time, there are always a few people attending our worship service, sharing circles, or picking up a bagged meal - who are currently unhoused. The term unhoused can have many descriptions: couch surfing (examples: sleeping on Auntie’s or Grandma’s sofa, or the floors of friends); hoping to find a bed that night at one of the local shelters; or sleeping outside somewhere. There are many circumstances that contribute to the situation of “no place to call my own”.
Mental Wellness Sharing Circles Program: The Lutheran Urban Ministry’s Mental Wellness Sharing Circles were facilitated by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), and took place from the first week of each month from September 2023 to April 2024 during the men’s lunch/sharing circle, the women’s and co-ed sharing circles.
• The Urban was fortunate to have the expertise of these facilitators from CMHA: Curtis, John, Huruy, Arlene, Heidi, Tracy-Ann, Brent, Jennifer, and Coralee. We are thankful for their knowledge, their active listening and responding, and for sharing their own anecdotes and stories with our Urban community; and we are very grateful to Natalie, Senior Manager of Psychosocial Rehabilitation, CMHA for her coordination of our Mental Wellness program. We had such wonderful discussions, information, and fellowship in the men’s lunch/sharing circles, and the women’s and co-ed sharing circles - that specifically addressed important subjects of mental wellness that touch us all during our lives.
To our MNO Congregation Members and Clergy: A wonderful opportunity to have fellowship with our Urban Community - please drop by anytime to our: Sunday Worship Service: door opens at 1:00 p.m. with coffee/tea. LITANY OF RECOGNITION AND HONOR FOR FATHER’S DAY:
On this day we recognize our fathers and stepfathers [and adoptive fathers], those who have nurtured and guided us in our lives.
We thank You, O God, for those who have been fathers to us.
We honor our grandfathers, our uncles and brothers, those who have demonstrated love and care to us in our lives.
We thank You, O God, for those who have been like fathers to us.
We appreciate our teachers, leaders and pastors, who have been both male and female, but we especially honor those who have extended fatherly tenderness and love in our lives in our past and present.
We thank You, O God, for those who have fulfilled a fatherly role in our lives.
Loving God, You have been both Mother and Father to us.
Abba, Father, we remember how Jesus called out to You on earth, recognizing that You are closer to us than our earthly parents. Your love and care for us are felt in the ways we are loved and cared for by others.
We thank You for all the male figures in our lives who have shared Your love with us.
We ask that You guide and nurture new fathers and fathers-to-be.
We seek Your forgiveness for fathers who have fallen short, for models of fatherhood that were limiting rather than embracing, for that is not Your model.
You are our ever-loving Parent, Father of us all.
Grant Your wisdom to all fathers and fatherly figures to love their children as You have loved Your children.
We thank You, O God, for fatherhood and motherhood, for the blessing of parents in our lives.
Abba, Father,
we pray with those who are mourning the loss of fathers today, and for those whose fathers were absent or abusive.
[We pray with those who were never able to have children or who mourn the absence of grandchildren.]
Ease their pain on this day, loving God.
May they know Your embrace, and that You are more than Father or Mother to us–
You are the all-loving, all-caring Parent,
Creator of heaven and earth, who knows the hairs on our heads.
We thank You, O God, that You are always with us, that You will never leave us or forsake us.
We thank You for this day, and ask that You bless all of Your children with Your love, as a wonderful father loves their child.
Amen.

What’s up with the organ?
St. Luke’s Zion has an Allen digital organ that was built in 1987. Currently, it is in need of cleaning, maintenance, and repair in order to be usable. The estimated cost of this service is around $2,700 plus tax. To give this amount some context, the original cost of the organ was in the $20,000-$30,000 range, and the cost of a similar instrument today would be in the $60,000-$70,000 range. Given the amount needed for repair, this is a congregational decision rather than a council decision. Hence, here are some details for you to consider, as well as an invitation to give some feedback:
- The most serious items needing attention are the main power cord, which could short out due to decaying and brittle insulation, and internal batteries that are close to leaking acid and need replacing.
- A number of areas need cleaning / adjustments / repair in order to produce a good sound and function as they should (a detailed list is available upon request)
- Very little maintenance has been done on this organ in almost 40 years. With repair, it is likely to last another decade or two.
- While cheap (or even free) organs can be found on Kijiji and in other places, the quality of both the sound and the organs are inferior to the one that we have
- The estimate provided includes parts, labour, a travel fee, and a cleaning / inspection of our digital keyboard (piano) at the same time
- In the opinion of an organist who has played in multiple churches around the city, it is worth it to fix this organ, and the estimate seems reasonable
- There are funds available from the Meakings bequest if we decide to go ahead with repairs (Roy was an organist!)
- Without repair, this organ cannot be used safely or sold
- While there is an organ sound on the digital keyboard, there is no way to change the sound being used or the volume in the same way as on an organ
Organ repair feedback form
(this is not a vote – just a survey!)
- I support repairing our Allen digital organ
- I’m pretty neutral on the subject
- I do not support repairing our Allen digital organ
