A message to the community
from Elaine Gelhorn:
On behalf of my family and I, we would like to thank everyone who made the 2023 Luther Village bike-a-thon the great success it was.
Bruce loved cycling, especially with his Luther Village family. I think he had the next years ride put into his calendar before completing the current year’s ride.
To Luther Village, to the sponsors; Grace Lutheran Church -Winnipeg, Richard Rosin Funeral Director Ltd., Standard Insurance, Jacob Design, Printed Shirts.ca, Your Style Financial, St. Andrews Airport, Priority Restoration, to all the people who sponsored people who rode, to everyone who participated in this years ride, and to all who donated their time to make this year’s Luther Village Bike-a-thon a great tribute to celebrate our Dad, Grandpa, and Husband
BRUCE GELHORN.
Luther Village will be officially changing the name of the Bike- a -thon for the next 10 years

ASSEMBLY 2023 / ELCIC SPECIAL CONVENTION
A joint Assembly with the Anglican Church of Canada, including the ELCIC Special Convention, was held at the University of Calgary from June 28 to July 2, 2023. The special convention was to deal with those items needing discussion, as last year’s convention was held online.
Everything associated with the Assembly and Convention can be found at anglicanlutheran.ca, including the bulletin of reports, livestreams, motions, and daily highlights.
CLWR - Canadian Lutheran World Relief:
Through our partnership with Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), we work together to challenge the causes and respond to the consequences of injustice and poverty.
For over 75 years, CLWR has served as a grassroots movement of Canadians committed to justice, peace and dignity for all people. One of Canada’s oldest and most trusted humanitarian organizations, CLWR focuses on developing long-lasting solutions for displaced and food-insecure people.
CLWR strives to foster sustainable development across the world, while supporting many Compassionate Justice initiatives within North America. In Canada, CLWR facilitates the engagement of Lutheran communities in refugee resettlement and provides funding to the ELCIC.
When making an undesignated gift to CLWR, a portion is given in support ELCIC Compassionate Justice initiatives, such as anti-poverty ministries in Synods, and peace and justice advocacy work throughout Canada.
LUTHERAN URBAN MINISTRY:
August 2023 News from your Ministry Manager (we were closed for holidays for the month of July)
The Urban Father’s Day Picnic at the Orioles Site on Burnell Street was wonderful! Bagged lunches, baseball, races, prizes and treats, and fellowship! So much fun and the picnic photos are on our website! Thanks to our communication director Rick Scherger (Fate Communications) for taking the photos and creating the photo pages. Our last annual picnic there was 2019 before the pandemic!
At the men’s, women’s and co-ed sharing circles last week the topic was courage and inner strength. An elder also brought many traditional plants to our co-ed circle and explained their history, uses and traditions going back centuries.
In my June Newsletter I spoke about reconciliation and getting to know each other. It’s so appreciated when our MNO city congregation members and clergy drop in to our circles and worship services. This is reconciliation in action. You don’t have to let me know you are coming by, just ring the doorbell. Here are details for our Sunday worship services and our sharing circles:
**Please drop in anytime to sit with us in our Urban Sharing Circles - for great conversations and fellowship or come and worship with us!
Sunday Worship Service: door opens at 1:00 p.m. Worship service from 1:30 – 2:15 p.m.

Going the Distance for the Urban, Sat., Sept. 16
Hi St. Lukes Zion Lutheran, Hoping that St. Lukes Zion will have a team (congregation members & kids wanting to walk or bike ride would be terrific!) for our 2nd annual Going the Distance for the Urban (replaces the former participation in Ride for Refuge). The kick-off and the bbq afterward will be at Abundant Life again - what an idyllic spot!
Sign-up is the same as last year. When you're signing up the team, the team captain sign-up (name and contact info, etc.) follows within the same sign-up process, not a separate sign-up process. Just let me know if you have any questions about the sign-up. Then the team members sign up as part of the team (there's a drop-down menu to pick St. Lukes Zion as the team to join once you've created the team).
