Rylen G. G. D. B.

Carlyn R. J. B.

VACATION DATES

Pastor Lynne will be away from July 12 to August 3 for three weeks of vacation.  A phone number will be on the church answering machine for any pastoral emergencies.  Also, on the Sundays you will be invited to join other congregations for online worship or to watch a sermon from one of our Canadian bishops or their assistants.

ONLINE WORSHIP:

For those who would like to join in our online worship, here's how to do it:

1. If you have a Facebook account, sign in to Facebook and search for @stlukeszion.  The video will not appear until the live stream begins, which is usually a few minutes before 10:30 am.  You can also view it any time after that.

2. With no Facebook account, go to Facebook.com/stlukeszion.  Click on "Not now" when it asks you to sign in or to sign up.  You should be able to view the service any time after 10:30 on the same day as it is recorded.

FINANCIAL UPDATE

Thank you to all those who have continued to support the ministry that we do together through St. Luke’s Zion.  As of June 30th, which is half way through the year, our expenses have been $8,409 more than our income.  At the same time last year, we were $4,104 short.  Our expenses this year have been slightly more than in 2020, and our income slightly less.  Please continue to support St. Luke’s Zion in whatever ways you can.  Thank you!

OPTIONS FOR OFFERINGS DURING COVID:

1. Sign up for PAR.  This is an automatic debit on the 20th of each month.  It costs 50 cents a month.

2. Give through the MNO synod website (mentioned above).  However, Canada Helps receives 4% of  each donation.

3. E-transfers are now available by contacting Sharon Appler.

4. Send in the mail.

5. Drop them off at the church.  Thank you!

SUNDAY SCHOOL:

We are working on different ways we can connect during the pandemic; we welcome any ideas you may have. Please email your ideas to: joannejanzen007@mymts.net

Thank You   SLZ Sunday School

YOUTH:

YOUTH COLLECTING WATER FOR SILOAM MISSION

The National Youth Project (youth homelessness in Canada) will be wrapping up this summer during the CLAY gathering. We are asking for your help as our SLAW Youth Group participates in this project by supporting the local needs of Siloam Mission. We will be collecting cases of bottled water - which are needed, especially during this HOT summer. If you would like to help us out, please bring a case (or 2) of bottled water (plain, not flavoured) to the Abundant Life parking lot on Friday morning, August 20th at 10:00 a.m. Let's see if we can fill more than one truck full! For more information, or alternate drop off please contact Lisa van Dijk

OUTDOOR WORSHIP

We are working towards some outdoor worship services in August and September.  At the moment, tentative dates are August 15th and 29th.  Those who wish to attend will be asked to pre-register with Joanne Janzen, as we need to have a list of who is present with contact information.  At the moment, we are allowed a maximum of 50 people outdoors.

DO YOU HAVE A HEART FOR REFUGEES?

For many years, St. Luke’s Zion has been a member of NEST (the North End Sponsorship Team), an ecumenical group that supports refugees coming to Winnipeg.  We are currently in need of at least one representative to serve on the NEST board.  If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Pastor Lynne.

LUM (Lutheran Urban Ministry)

June 2021 News from your Ministry Manager

The Urban is closed for holidays for the month of July

The news of the remains of 215 children discovered buried on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School has filled us with grief and we grieve with the First Nations of Canada. This news is only a small representation of the neglect, abuse, deaths, loneliness, hunger, pain, grief, and anguish experienced - and continues to affect the memories and current life of countless Indigenous people.

We also grieve with the Muslim community in Canada for the senseless act of terrorism and racism that resulted in the death of four members of a family in London, Ontario. A nine year old boy is hospitalized and no longer has a grandma, sister, and parents. Our neighbour, the Winnipeg Central Mosque, is only a few streets away and we stand with them in friendship and support.

Vaccination Clinics in the city are busy and I’ve heard a lot of people excitedly saying, “I’ve been vaccinated”. The pandemic has affected so many lives with loss of connection, financial hardship, and also illness. A man who regularly came to the Urban for years was taken off life support a few days ago. He will be missed greatly.

When the pandemic is over we’ll have so many things to talk about in our Men’s, Women’s and Co-ed Sharing Circles!! I’m sure that it will take at least a month for us all to talk about what’s happened in our lives over all those Covid-19 months! When we re-open downstairs I’m also planning a Women’s Drop-in (including children and grandchildren) every Wednesday afternoon after the Women’s Sharing Circle.

Pandemic Notes: Until Further Notice: the Urban is continuing the suspension of all regular programming (sit-down community meals, coffee hours, sharing circles, men’s group, worship services, etc.) in the lower level of Lutheran Church of the Cross, due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Struggling and vulnerable single people and families (in the same numbers as pre-pandemic times when we were open downstairs) are continuing to come to the Urban - bagged lunches 4x/week are distributed outside (Wednesday men’s lunch, Wednesday & Thursday supper times and Sunday lunch). Our meal teams are happy to help us in this way and we are so very grateful for this. Our website calendar shows available dates for meal teams. Fellowship is happening briefly in the parking lot as long as weather permits! Worship services and sharing circles will resume when the pandemic is over.

· Mid-week and Sunday devotionals are emailed to me from Pastor Barry Bence, printed and tucked into lunch bags.

· We have changed our pre-pandemic emergency food bags to an equitable “one food item” (if enough in our pantry) per person (two items if a family) once or twice each week during the distribution of bagged lunches. Gloves, socks, seasonal jackets etc. (and weekly bread/pastries) are also distributed outside.

· Masks and 2 m social distancing are mandatory on the church sidewalk and parking lot. The line sometimes overflows to the city sidewalk if necessary and all current gathering sizes are enforced as per provincial regulations. The Urban provides a disposable mask if needed.

The Lutheran Urban Ministry has so much gratitude for our volunteers and the meal teams; for the pantry donations, for the prayers; and for all those who donate financial support toward our operating expenses.

Our website: www.theurban.ca. Please keep our vulnerable Lutheran Urban Ministry community in your prayers.

Please contact me: rhonda@theurban.ca for additional information, or to have your meal team added to the calendar. Kind regards,

Rhonda Gorham,

Ministry Manager, Lutheran Urban Ministry Corp.
