MNO SYNOD CONVENTION REPORT:
The Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Synod’s 17th Convention was held Thursday to Saturday, April 26-28, 2018. I attended as St. Luke Zion lay delegate, along with Pastor Lynne as a rostered delegate. It was an interesting time of listening, sharing experiences, voting, singing, and lots of praying.
The convention theme was “Bearing fruit on the vine - a branch cannot bear fruit by itself.” Each table of delegates had the opportunity to discuss the passage from John 15:1-8, and we talked about how we, i.e. our congregation, is connected to Christ, the vine. By our actions such as the Food Bank, contributing to The Urban, etc, we bear fruit. And sometimes we need pruning so that the church can grow stronger.
National Bishop Susan Johnson attended the convention, and in her report commented on being inspired by the wider church’s response to the Reformation appeal over the last year. That included sponsoring refugees, planting trees, supporting the ELCJHL schools in Jordan and the Holy Land, and the LWF endowment fund. Bishop Susan spoke of four priorities for the future: 1) Innovation, 2) reconciling relationships, 3) remembering we are one body, and 4) knowing we are empowered for ministry. The focus will also be on a more robust laity. She announced that the 2019 National Convention will be held in Regina with the theme “Called to Reconciliation”. She encourages us to realize that we are ABLE to respond.
After 12 years of inspiring service from Synod Bishop Elaine Sauer, attendees at the convention were charged with choosing a new bishop. Preparation for this had been happening at monthly church council meetings and at a delegate meeting where we learned about discernment and took note of qualities that we look for in a bishop. What I would like to make known is that after the second ballot, our Pastor Lynne was in third place. There was good support for her to consider this role, but the spirit moved in another direction. As you may already know, after four ballots, Pastor Jason Zinko, currently at Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, was elected. He will be ordained in September.
Lastly, I would like to relay the message I heard about the future direction of our synod. Our to equip, lay people to be leaders in the church. To that end, the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon has developed online courses for lay people.
For those interested in specific reports, or a summary of convention business, all is available at the website mnosynod.org
I thank you for allowing me to participate in the convention.

EL.C.I.C. MISSION AS HOPE APPEAL:
Since this annual appeal began in 2009, it has allowed us to continue funding ongoing mission in our Synod, ministries like Luther Village, Lutheran Urban Ministry, Youth and Young Adult Programming and Cameroon visits.
Perhaps even more significantly, it has provided resources to do some new things in our Synod each year, which would have not been possible with the regular benevolence dollars.
That has been a powerful gift to our Synod.
