MNO SYNOD: MNO Winter Youth Retreat
February 18-20, 2017
St Paul's Lutheran Church, Steinbach, MB
Our theme is “In Another’s Shoes” What would it be like to live in another place? Can you imagine not living in Manitoba or Northwestern Ontario? …or even being from outside Canada? Questions like these will be part of our time together at the retreat.
Our presenters for the weekend will be artists, Andraea Sartison and Caroline Wintoniw. As Artistic Director of One Trunk Theatre, Andraea has been involved in writing and directing dramatic pieces on the Winnipeg artistic scene for several years. Caroline may be known to some of you as a member of the 2012 CLAY drama team; she is a photographer and videographer. Together, Andraea and Caroline have collaborated on a number of projects, and our time with them will include some of a project they’re working on, currently called “Refuge,” – come to the retreat to hear more.

NEST:
Word has been received by Jim Mair (who is our ‘rep’ on the Manitoba Refugee Council) that we ‘MAY’ expect to welcome one of our refugee families currently in Kenya, and originally from the CONGO, to arrive within the next month!!
Their application was submitted in 2009 – ROSE EJIRA, who now has 8 children (the youngest son born in 2010), and 2 grandchildren. They have passed their medicals and security checks are being done.
A large (5 bedroom) home is thankfully being held until the end of February – an ‘agreement’ with the owner and her real estate firm. There is sufficient furniture and furnishings from 2 homes – one from a recent ‘move of a refugee family to Windsor, Ontario (in storage), and one from a family who are ‘downsizing’. When originally submitted, Rose had 3 children. There were only 6 families approved through Nairobi for CLWR in 2016.
There will be another family of 7 (Rose’s sister) expected. Should you have furniture or furnishings you would wish to donate, please let me know, but we kindly ask you to keep them until needed.
Thank You.
The ‘slide-show’ used at our 30th Anniversary Dinner in Septmeber 2016, may be shown at our February 28th General Meeting or at the Annual meeting in April. We need an ‘operator’

THE MITTEN BASKET:
A big thank you to all who contributed to this yearly project. There were so many wonderful knit items made this year. In late November these items were taken to the Urban Mission, our Food Bank, Ralph Brown School, Champlain Scjhool, Machray School, Mount Carmel Clinic and Winnipeg Harvest.
We have quite a few knitters that donate their time and sometimes material to lovingly make these items. This project is always in need of supplies. If you have any wool, can knit or make a monetary donation this would be greatly appreciated. Please mark your envelope KNITTING PROJECT.
Thank you

MNO SYNOD:
Our synod is hosting the 2017 National Church convention July 6–8, (Thursday to Saturday) at the University of Manitoba. This is in keeping with the new convention format, fewer delegates, no banquet and delegate departures on Saturday rather than Sunday.
However, volunteers are required to flesh out the Local Arrangement Committee (LAC) and to provide support for the many convention activities. We currently hold the convention every two years and the synods alternate hosting the event. Given the two year rotation, the format for support and running the convention has been established and the volunteers will be well briefed for their chosen activity.
Volunteer positions for LAC:
Vice-chair Secretary Office
Head Steward Head Usher Registration
Information Desk Transportation
Sub-committee chairpersons
Worship Offering Counter
Consider volunteering and meet new acquaintances and possibly old friends. Experience the depth and commitment of your fellow church members as they work to move the church forward.
To volunteer or for further information contact Norman Coull at: Phone: 204.885.1692
