Christianity’s Jewish Roots with Music and Humour:

Phil Spevack will be bringing this one hour presentation to St. Luke’s Zion Lutheran Church (2903 McPhillips Street) on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:00 pm.  He has prepared this presentation as part of his multi-faith functions, and has presented at United, Anglican and Roman Catholic churches here in Winnipeg.  His objective is to foster understanding of Christianity's Jewish roots and to rejoice in our similarities and differences. He covers parts of the Bible and music - some Hebrew, some pop and some Negro Spirituals - and 4000 years of history in an hour.  All are invited to come and share in this experience.

Refreshments will follow the presentation.

CAMEROON COMPANIONS UPDATE:

National Day of Mourning Declared in Cameroon

While it is the rainy season, on October 21, southern Cameroon experienced an intense rain storm which washed out an important bridge, making highway travel between Yaounde and Douala impassible. To deal with this, the train line increased their capacity, but an unstable rail bed due to the rains resulted in a tragic derailment, with over 70 people killed and 600 people injured.

A petition for your personal and corporate prayers is provided here:
O God, strong fortress in our times of trouble, give comfort and clarity of vision to our brothers and sisters in Cameroon, as their nation mourns the impacts of the train tragedy and deals with the flooding and loss of important infrastructure which has taken place there this past week. Look with mercy upon all who grieve the loss of loved ones, bring healing to those who have been injured, and strengthen all with patience at they seek to rebuild their lives.

Have you been to Cameroon YET?

The dates for YET (Youth Engagement Trip) are now set for July 2017. If you are between the ages of 16 and 25 and would like to have a cross-cultural experience while developing relationships with others from the MNO Synod and Cameroon, why not consider applying? Application form  https:/cameroonYET.weebly.com
Application deadline is November 7, 2016.

COLLECTING HERSTORIES:

to Celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation

Herstories is a project related to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Herstories is an initiative developed through the Lutheran World Federation to tell the stories of women who have reformed and continue to reform the church.

Within every region of the Lutheran World Federation, churches are collecting stories of women past and present who have made a difference. As the LWF webpage describes it: Our women’s networks are uncovering the stories of women who played important roles during the Reformation or in the years since. We want to get to know these “forgotten” women, who have been agents for renewal in their communities. Both the ELCIC and the ELCA are collecting stories that will be used on our respective websites with links to each other.

We would like to have you submit stories to serve as inspiring examples as others throughout North America. We are looking for a story of 400-600 words with a photo (if at all possible). Consider using some of the following questions to guide you:
· Name—of the individual woman or group
· Date(s) of birth (and death if applicable)
· Place—congregation, city, country, member communion
· Describe three or four major events that took place in your congregation in the last years
· What are the main contributions of the individual woman or women’s groups to the lives of the people in the congregation/community?
· Describe the main contributions of her faith life to the church and/or society
· Highlight one or two important moments in her life
· What or who contributed to the development of that woman or group’s experience of faith in a Lutheran community?
· Describe the experiences that contributed to who the woman is (was) in her church, congregation, group today. Is there someone who helped her, who mentored her?
· Our Lutheran identity is based on always being in re-formation, constantly being in movement. What did the woman do to bring about reform in her congregation, church, community, or society? So whose Herstory do you want to tell? Your grandmother’s? The first woman pastor you met? Your own?

Please submit a story to Trina Gallop tgallop@elcic.ca by October 31, 2016. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Bishop Susan at sjohnson@elcic.ca or Trina at tgallop@elcic.ca.
