CLAY UPDATE:
From August 17-21, almost 1000 youth, leaders and volunteers from both the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and Anglican Church of Canada (ACC) gathered together in Charlottetown, PEI for several days filled with worship, learning and servant events. Canadian Lutheran-Anglican Youth (CLAY) participants engaged in the Reformation theme of Not for Sale.
The highlights of the event included serving the wider community through servant events on the first day together; being entertained and challenged through the work of the Drama Troupe; singing worship songs together during the Large Group Gatherings; and meeting other youths and leaders from across the country as they learned about the National Youth Project, The Right to Water.
The next CLAY gathering will be held in Thunder Bay, Ontario, hosted by the MNO Synod of the ELCIC and the Diocese of Algoma of the ACC, and will take place in August 2018.
LUTHER HOME ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:
Please mark your calendar for Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 2:00 to attend the Annual General Meeting, which will be held in the chapel at Luther Home, 1081 Andrews Street. The meeting will be followed by refreshments. This will be a great opportunity to meet the new Board Members and reconnect with other Corporation members. If you are not a Corporation member, this would also be an opportunity to sign a Membership Declaration form to become one. Corporate Members are eligible to vote on the appointment of Board Members and Auditors. They also review the annual financial statements. There is no fee to become a Corporation member. A notice will be sent out either by e-mail or Canada Post to Corporation members in advance of the meeting and the agenda and accompanying documentation will be available at Luther Home.
NEST:
We were blessed to celebrate our 30th anniversary on September 17th at the Grace Lutheran Church. Following an abundant (and varied!) potluck supper, some 120 ‘guests’ heard brief messagesfrom one of the founders, ELISABETH KUNKEL (with husband PASTOR JOHANN), current member (chair – DOREEN THORLACIUS) and early arrivals (JUNE CHAU from Viet Nam in 1992). Doreen’s husband, ERNEST BERBUSCH, played an important role, as he had served at Canadian Embassier throughout the world. Our thanks to Grace Lutheran for hosting the event, and our monthly meetings as well. NEST’s Anniversary was also recognized in the Sept. 17th edition of the Winnipeg Free Press. It included a large close-up picture of Elisabeth, Jim Mair (our refugee co-ordinator) and a former refugee KOFFI SEDZRO from TOGO (2004).
The ISSA family HANI and SLVANA, two daughters (11 and 5) and son (9), who arrived from IRAQ,
Nov. 30, 2015, have moved to Windsor, Ontario (Sept.) to be closer to family. HANI has 3 brothers and families living in Detroit, and his Mother soon to come. Mr. Mair is in touch with a Catholic Support Group to help them get settled. Messiah Luthern church formed a “care-giver group’ to see the ISSA’s comfortably settled (including household goods) and welcomed to the community. NEST has rented a locker to store the furniture and furnishings, etc. that will benefit our future arrivals.
A family originally from the CONGO, whose application was submitted in 2008 are having a second interview Nov. 28, 2016, which is a step-closer to being accepted by Canada Immigration! They include mother (MARTHA), father (KAZADI),4 children and 3 siblings of Martha (in their 20’s). Their arrival may be expected in 2017.
Coming Events:
NEST General Meeting will be held on October 25th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church.
All are welcome! Refreshments to follow

ELCIC:
Synod office is willing to coordinate and promote a synod wide emphasis from November 2016 to November 2017.
We will begin to post ideas or your events on the synod website and Facebook page should the information reach the Communications Coordinator by November 1, 2017. We would also encourage partnerships wherever possible, and for events to be ecumenical as well. We would like to ensure that there are no conflicts of dates for congregations/groups and would be especially excited if we had an event every week anywhere across the synod. Wouldn’t it be great to travel around our synod to a variety of events and activities?
Here are some events already planned:
November 10-13, 2016: Bus Trip to Minneapolis to visit Luther Exhibit (Find more info here)
July, 2017 ELCIC National Convention Celebratory Worship Service
November 17, 2017 Lecture presentation by renowned Luther scholar, Dr. Tim Wengert, St. Stephen and St. Bede, Winnipeg
ALIGN Update:
It was very encouraging to engage with the 80 Lutherans and Anglicans who came together at Faith Lutheran, Winnipeg for the information meeting (September 14) with Dr. Roxburgh and the ALIGN team. In addition to those who gathered in the worship space, there were several more who attended online. At the end of the level of excitement in this response is an inspiration to us and the ALIGN team. At the end of the evening, more than 30 persons signed up indicating their interest to come along on this exciting new journey as we seek out where God is active among our neighbours and in the neighbourhoods we call home. Since last week, we have learned of several more persons who are interested in becoming involved. The level of excitement in this response is an inspiration to us and the ALIGN team.
For those who were unable to attend, videos of the event were posted at
http://www.mnosynod.org/align-rampup-videos.html
As explained at the meeting, for the first stage of this experimental journey, the ALIGN team has now chosen four neighbourhoods from where the greatest interest was expressed. These are:
Wolseley/West End of Winnipeg
Selkirk, MB area
Southwest Winnipeg (Whyte Ridge,
Lindenwoods, Waverley West, Richmond)
West and East Kildonan, Winnipeg
(If your neighborhood was not chosen, please know that we really value your interest and will seek to include you in further stages of this work.)
If you live in one of these four neighborhoods and did not yet sign up, please indicate your interest by emailing us ASAP at aligntogether@gmail.com Please use this email address as well if you wish to be regularly updated on what is taking place with ALIGN.
Be Part of a Network Interested in Issues of Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice:
