***LUTHER READING CHALLENGE:
As we approach the 500th anniversary of the posting of the Ninety-Five Theses on October 31, 2017, Martin Luther is going to be a significant topic of conversation and debate. That is where the Luther Reading Challenge comes in. An assortment of the reformer's writings will be presented online for everyone to read and to reflect upon. The texts range from Luther's personal letters and hymns to his doctrinal and social treatises to his catechisms and his will. Each text is prefaced with an introduction to orient the reader. The reading part is just the beginning. Readers can also participate in online discussions. You simply have to register! This is a joint venture of The Lutheran World Federation and the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg.

N.E.S.T. NEWS:
In the last report, it was noted that NEST welcomed FIKRE TESHAI, who is the Development Manager – Refugee Resettlement for C.L.W.R. (in Vancouver). He was very informative about the current refugee situations.
Consider there are about 50 million refugees in the world, with about another 150 million undocumented (stated from credible sources).
The prime goal is to have refugees able to return to their communities and be safe. Unfortunately it is not working well; as wars and persecutions of minorities continue to make this impossible conditions.
The backlog of processing applications through the Canadian Immigration Council (CIC) is down to an average of 3 years. Still some may take over 5 years; and some new applications may get processed before others who have waiting in camps for a long time.
NEST has submitted in 2009, applications for 2 related families originally from the Congo, and in the KAKUMA camp in KENYA. Since then the families have “grown” – a new son (now 4 years) to one family, and a son and 2 daughters (5, 3, and 7 months) to the second family.
When asked how the restrictions in the number of applications affect a sponsorship that has increased since the initial date, FIKRE stated there are 2 different rules:
1. If dated 2011 and before, can add a new family member (eg. baby). NEST must approve the change and submit it to C.L.W.R. (our Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH), and acceptance confirmed by the CIC.
2. After January 1st, 2012, there are “CAP” limits placed on SAH members. If no “spots” available, the family may have to wait for new spots with new family members and adjust the application or re-apply!Mr. Mair is currently awaiting word.
. . . To follow up from the last report, the MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, in celebration of their 50th Anniversary, have confirmed their wish for “partnership” in supporting a refugee family (of 4 to 6) from Syria. NEST will apply to CIC for their special offer called “Blended Visa Office Referred (BVOR). This offer provides Interim Federal Health – i.e.: 1 full year health, and 6 months of living allowances. NEST is to provide “start up” costs and the other 6 months living allowances, not to exceed and expected maximum cost of $15,000. Messiah Lutheran will supply the “CARE”-giving Team (so far 7 members) with another 7-8 to assist in establishing a home; i.e.: donate furnishings, household goods, clothing, food staples. The family could come as easily as in a month. They would not be counted against Canada’s “CAP” (Allocations).
***FUNDRAISING EVENT:
NEST will be applying to Applebee’s for a Pancake Breakfast, but not until after August 15th, as requested by the Restaurant. This is a very popular fundraiser.
***UPCOMING EVENT:
NEST Summer Picnic, hosted by the Winnipeg Beach United Church on Saturday, August 15, 2015. Potluck lunch, games, prizes! There will be a Chartered Bus (no cost) All Are Invited!
Please see poster for details. Contact Jim Mair for bus reservations (phone: 204-632-4757 or jimmair@shaw.ca)
***RAINDATE IS AUGUST 22, 2015***
NOTE: there will be no NEST General Meeting in July 2015. The next NEST General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 25th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.
ONLINE DEVOTIONS:
In the past, some of you have appreciated the online devotions offered by Lutherans Connect (a branch of Lutheran Campus Ministry in Toronto). Normally they have offered this during Advent or Lent, but now are starting a new series today. It doesn't look like there will be devotions every day, but they are well worth looking at if you haven't tried it before. Here's the link: http://lcfeastingwithsaints.blogspot.ca/2015/05/day-1.html

MAKE SOMEONE’S DAY:
Did you know there is a program called Well Wishes that Winnipeg's hospitals have implemented. Anyone can send an e-mail message to a hospital patient by using the special links shown on each hospital website. A volunteer will review the email, then print it and deliver it to the patient that very day in most cases (except for weekends), and even read it to him/her if neccessary. Nothing beats a personal visit, but this is the next best thing; and is such a nice surprise for the hospitalized person.
Each individual hospital has their own link to access (see links listed below). Sometimes hospitals do change them. If any of these links should not work, just go that particular hospital's website and the Well Wishes program information is usually on their opening web page. Just fill in the form with the patients' name etc., and hit "send."
