the 2012 CLAY Gathering in Saskatoon, and the corresponding MNO Synod bus trip to and from the Gathering, (with a slight detour through Medicine Hat, Banff, Calgary, and Edmonton) are now part of the memories (and pictures) of some 175 youth and leaders who attended the Gathering from the MNO Synod. In the midst of our hyperlinked world, six different guest speakers along with our bishops, and along with the music team and drama team invited all those gathered to make certain that we understand the impact of our being integrally linked to our God, to God's people all over the world, and to all of God's creation. Six young adults from the MNO Synod were chosen to be part of the Band and the Drama Teams for CLAY - Evan Curtis, Luke Filipowicz, Alyssa Graff, Kristian Jordan, Kate Langrell, and Caroline Wintoniw.
Y.A.M. Last call for "The Plunge"
The Plunge deadline has been extended until October 15th, 2012! Take the PLUNGE into a deeper spirituality - Two synods, the Manitoba / Northwestern Ontario Synod of the ELCIC and the Northeastern Iowa Synod of the ELCA, are sponsoring a Plunge for young adults to experience the spirituality and global faithcommunity of the ecumenical centers in Geneva, Switzerland, and Taize, France. The first Plunge is scheduled for May 29-June 9, 2013. Twenty or more young adults of 18-29 years of age will go to Geneva May 29-June 2, where they will visit the World Council of Churches and Lutheran World Federation offices in the Ecumenical Center, stay at the John Knox Center, and worship at the international congregation there. Then they will travel by train to Taize for a week long retreat. These young adults will spend nine months preparing for their journey and then after their return will spend a year sharing and incorporating what they have learned in their home congregations and synods.

NEW YOUTH ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR at CLWR:
Greetings from Winnipeg! My name is Tyler, and I am the newest member of the Canadian Lutheran World Relief team - I am the Youth Engagement Coordinator.
First - have you "liked" our new Facebook page? It has been in existence since August 1st, and we are using it to keep people in touch about youth - and young adult-related opportunities, and general networking. Make sure to encourage your youth ("under 25") - or perhaps even submit an entry yourself - to take part in our Photo Contest. You can find the contest, along with rules and how to submit, on our Facebook page. This is the contest where you could win an iPad, and the closing date has been extended to the end of September. Submit your photo, and get your friends to vote. Over the next number of months, I will be working with my colleagues, here at CLWR, with the intention of organizing international exposure opportunities. These will be short-term and longer-term experiences abroad where youth and young adults can experience and engage in the work of CLWR. Please keep in touch to find out more as these plans develop.
If you, your congregation, or perhaps even your school, are looking for ways to engage in humanitarian, relief, and development work, we would like to be in touch with you! We have resources available, and we will be working on new resources, and we would love for you to use them in your context and hold up the work with which CLWR has been engaging since 1946. Make sure to check out the occasional videos we post online - particularly our new "CLAY webisodes" with footage from the gathering. We're about to release some Confirmation materials for use by congregations - check our resources page for those in the next short while.

I had a conversation with a very nice young man on Sunday. He always has something to say to me that is either teasing or very kind. He had been pretending to cheer me on as I parked my car on McGee. I asked him how he was doing and he replied “Great!" He is clean and sober and he stated that he really enjoys life. The only thing that bothered him is that people always think that he is angry. We began a discussion on why this happens so very often in each day.
He is not used to smiling a lot. He attributes this to being raised in a series of group homes. The group homes could be very tough and so he learned to walk through life with a look that appears to be just covering an anger that is difficult to control. Once one “dares” to look in his eyes, one can see the twinkle that shows that he is not angry, he is just not able to show that he is happy or content. I try my best to “crack him up” whenever possible so that people can see that he laughs like the rest of us. He has a beautiful smile and it is intensified because of how rare they have been in his life. It is so very sad that his life experience has taught him to not show joy or happiness. This has been a good life lesson for me and others. It teaches us how we should not make assumptions. It also teaches us the value of smiling at others and sending a message of joy and peace. I pray that this young man will learn to smile more and trust that he is safe to do so. |
