N.E.S.T.

On Tuesday, May 29, 2012 the Eritrean Fesahaye sisters Eyovell (23) Betial (21) arrived from the Refugee Camp in Cairo. They are being financially supported and cared for by the Eritrean Church and Community. This application was made through NEST, December 2009.

The NEST Summer Picnic was held at Little Mountain Park on Saturday, July 14th. Some 50 refugees and caregivers enjoyed a lovely summer day, with a pot-luck lunch, games, races, (water filled balloons always a favorite!) and prizes.

As of June 30th, the Canadian Government has cut the Extended Health Benefits for newly-arrived refugees, in their first year in Canada (covers dental, glasses, drugs, mobility aids, etc.). A group of students from the Canadian Mennonite University started a program called the “59 cent Campaign”. They are asking all Canadians to place 59 cents in an envelope, and send it to the Prime Minister’s office (the amount it would cost Canadians to restore the health benefits for 1 year. It is meant to tell the Prime Minister “we will not stand for these cuts”. The envelope should be addressed:

59 Cent Campaign
To the Right Honorable Stephen Harper
Government of Canada

No postage is required. The groups are also working on another plan this fall.

Early Christian Worship

The following is a description of what happened at worship in the first century. Are there things we can learn from this? Justin Martyr writes:

On Sunday, all are gathered together in unity. The records of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read as long as time allows. The presider exhorts and invites us into the pattern of these good things. Then we all stand and offer prayer.

When we have concluded the prayer, bread is set out together with wine…. The presider then offers prayer and thanksgiving and the people sing out their assent, saying the “Amen.” There is distribution of the things over which thanks has been said and each person participates, and these things are sent to those who are not present.

Those who are prosperous give what they wish according to each one’s own choice, and the collection is deposited with the presider, who aids orphans and widows, those in want because of disease, those in prison, and foreigners who are staying here.

We hold this meeting together on Sunday since it is the first day, on which God, having transformed darkness and matter, created the world. On the same day Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead. On Sunday he appeared to his apostles and disciples and taught them these things which we present to you. (From the Apology of Justin Martyr – c. 150 A.D. – printed on p. 6 of With One Voice)
