Be a part of The Urban’s ODD SOCK GIVING CAMPAIGN!
ODD SOCKS?
What's it all about?
It's The Urban's 3rd special giving campaign, an opportunity for outreach to help The Urban during the Lenten season. In the last two years around $10,000.00 was raised for the Urban by the Odd Sock campaign. As we think of slowly discarding our winter socks, what better time to think about what to do with all of those 'odd socks' we all have? At The Urban we know great things often come from humble beginnings... and like odd socks, we know we can make the most out of little. At The Urban, we are challenged daily to accept the many people from diverse circumstances who come to our doors, many from different cultures and societal backgrounds. Every day, The Urban joyfully opens its doors to all kinds of people – to help them, to love and accept them the way they are. Our Odd Sock Campaign is a reminder to give... just as we are... and to care for others... just as they are...
During this Lenten season, as you participate in our Odd Sock Campaign, reflect on what internal work you may need to do, to be accepting of the people around you…
If you have questions or need more info,
contact: The Urban (Lutheran Urban Ministry) 641 St. Matthews Ave ~ Winnipeg, MB ~ R3G 0G6

Pot-Luck Lunch & Birthday Party
On Sunday, March 13th after worship there will be a pot-luck lunch and 104th Birthday party for Winnie Gorner. Winnie says that you can come only if you do not bring cards or gifts. However, if you insist on bringing something, a donation for the food bank would be just fine. J It would also be a good idea to bring some food to share for lunch. All are invited, and all are welcome!
Congregational Meeting
A brief congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, March 20th following the service. This will be to approve the revised treasurer’s report for 2010.
Youth Fund
For a few years there, not much was being used out of our youth fund. However, thankfully those funds are being used again now that Kelly is on board as our director of youth ministry. This means that any donations to the youth fund are now welcome! On that “Special” line on your envelope, you can just say “youth” if you wish to add to this fund. At the same time, please continue to give to our weekly budget, as the other bills need to be paid, too!
Evangelical Lutheran Worship
In the near future, we will be receiving a shipment of hymnals, sometimes referred to as the “cranberry book.” This purchase was approved at our annual meeting on February 13th. At the same time, we voted to invite donations for the hymnals from anybody who wishes to give one or two or more. To this end, there will be a sign-up sheet available where you can indicate how many you would like to donate, as well as if it is in memory of anybody. The cost is $28 per hymnal, which can be included in your offering under “Special.” Simply mark it “hymnals” or “EvLW.”

CLWR UPDATE/NEWS
CLWR ships school supplies and other valuable commodities to assist with relief efforts in Haiti
CLWR has finalized a shipment of supplies which will assist Haitians displaced by the January 12, 2010 earthquake. The 40-foot shipping container was loaded at our warehouse on January 20 and 21, 2011. The supplies are estimated to arrive in Haiti mid-to-late March. Although the shipment contains everything from quilts to medical equipment, its focus is to provide for the education of children. CLWR’s Director of Community Relations Tom Brook was part of a CLWR-led delegation that visited Haiti in the fall of 2010 to view 50 temporary and 60 semi-permanent schools constructed by CLWR. One hundred more semi-permanent schools are planned.
“As Haitians continue the difficult process of rebuilding their lives and livelihood, even a year after the earthquake the needs of that region are still great,” says Brook. “Schools, although temporary, are available for use in Haiti, but school supplies are still needed.”
In October 2010, CLWR put out a special appeal to the members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and Lutheran Church—Canada for donations of school supplies. In addition, a special request was made as part of the appeal for soccer balls for use during recreation breaks.
“On my last day in Port-au-Prince, I spoke to a young boy asked for only one thing which was to ‘please send him a ball,’” says Brook.
Approximately 2,000 packs of school supplies – which include pencils, notebooks, and soccer balls - is included in the shipment. The medical supplies include 25 hospital beds and seven wheelchairs, and were provided through CLWR’s partnership with International H.O.P.E. The shipment’s total value is approximately $80,000 CDN.
