 N.E.S.T.
At our Annual Church meeting (Feb. 14), when I was given the opportunity to comment on the role of the Church representative on the Member Board of N.E.S.T. (i.e. having the vote application for refugee sponsorship and budget), I should also have spoken of the “rewards”!
Among the many, are the meeting and friendships formed of the representatives from the member Churches, and our new Canadians!
Our meetings close with “updates”, happenings shared by members, re special Church or refugees family or personal events.
I, for one, have been privileged to become friends with Keo Chau, who arrived with her 5 year old daughter Dung, from Vietnam (via Hong Kong) in April, 1992. I’m blessed to be included as “family” on special occasions – birthdays, Chinese New Year, and now, as June (legally changed from Dung) graduates from the University of Winnipeg with her Education degree! June already has a part-time position, teaching at Sister MacNamara School. Graduation Day is June 11th.
Many of the “care givers” have made lasting friendships with those they have met and helped in becoming Canadian citizens, with promising and happy futures.
Come, meet the world! Be a representative for St. Luke’s Zion.
Our Annual Meeting is Tuesday, April 20th, 7:00 p.m. at Kildonan United Church, 187 Kilbride Ave. All are Welcome!
            Thank You & Blessings,
                                    Dorothy Handkamer

Gifts from the Heart program reaches new heights
Supporters of Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) lifted the Gifts from the Heart program to new heights in 2009. Between September 1 and December 31, 2009, just over 4,000 people purchased items from the gift catalogue for a total value of $370,000. When compared to the same period in 2008, the number and value of donations increased by almost 135 percent.
The most popular gift—a pair of goats. Other frequently chosen items included a flock of chickens, training for teachers and fishnets. Funds raised through the Gifts from the Heart catalogue are used to support CLWR’s community development programming in Bolivia, Peru, Mozambique, Zambia and India.
CLWR extends its appreciation for the enthusiastic response to the Gifts for the Heart program. Please consider using the catalogue for other special occasions throughout the year, such as birthdays, graduations and anniversaries. To view the catalogue, please visit www.clwr.org (click on Donate Today). Purchases can be made online or by calling 1-800-661-2597 (or (204)694-5602 in the Winnipeg area).
            You can make a difference!
Concerts raise funds for the Appeal for Haiti
The congregations of St. Matthew’s Lutheran, Sudbury, and St. Andrew’s Lutheran, Toronto, have raised close to $4,000 for the C.L.W.R. Appeal for Haiti. The Toronto event, held on February 21, featured performances by Amy Sky, Maiko Watson and internationally acclaimed gospel singer Kay Morris.
At Sudbury, the St. Matthew’s Senior Choir was joined by other local performers, including Sointu, Maria Saari, the Joy Choir and the North Wind sextet. Together, they entertained an audience of 130 people.
As of March 22, donations to the CLWR Appeal for Haiti stood at $1.1 million. About $300,000 of these funds are being used to support emergency relief work being carried out by CLWR’s primary partner, the Lutheran World Federation (also a member of ACT). Plans are being formulated to provide longer term recovery assistance, most likely through the construction of earthquake and hurricane
proof housing.

NEW ELCIC NATIONAL OFFICE STAFFING TEAM
Models Effective Partnerships and Focused Framework
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) National Bishop Susan C. Johnson is employing a new model of staffing that lifts up the ELCIC's priorities of effective partnerships and focused framework.
Three new senior staff members have joined the National Office in a part-time deployed capacity and were introduced at the recent National Church Council meeting. The new model, "will help to balance our budget, but will also bring a multiplier effect with the addition of these new staff members who all bring expertise, creativity and enthusiasm in their focused areas," says Bishop Johnson, who also notes that, "the new model allows for an effective partnership with congregations. The National Office has used part-time deployed staff before, but never to this extent."
In September 2009, the National Office refocused its work and staffing levels to reflect current resource and programmatic challenges. While ensuring a commitment to priority areas such as Global Mission, Ecumenical Relations and Worship, the changes allowed the National Office to explore the possibility of new staffing models. This new model enables flexibility as the church undertakes a Structural Renewal Process heading towards the 2013 ELCIC National Convention.
The three new staff members, Rev. Carla Blakley,Rev. Lyle McKenzie and  Rev. André Lavergne join the existing senior staff of Rev. Paul Gehrs, Assistant to the Bishop in the areas of public policy, youth, and leadership for ministry, Trina Gallop, director of communications and stewardship, and Gloria McNabb, director of finance and administration.
A directory of National Office staff members, along with contact information, can be viewed online at: http://elcic.ca/National-Church-Council/Staff.cfm
Meet the new staff members next month!
