WHAT DOES BENEVOLENCE SUPPORT?
Donations to “Benevolence” support social justice work. In the Affirmation of Baptism service, each one of us promises “to strive for justice and peace in all the earth” (LBW p. 201). All who have either been confirmed or have joined the Lutheran Church as an adult have made this promise.
As individuals, of course, we are fairly limited in what we can do in this area. However, as a national or even world-wide church body, we can have far more of an impact.
In our case, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) is a member of KAIROS. KAIROS is a Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiative. It is an organization in which we partner with other Canadian churches in order to work on matters of justice and peace in Canada and around the world.
You may have noticed in the most recent Canada Lutheran (Jan/Feb 2010) that KAIROS was featured in the “Justice Agenda.” Funding to KAIROS was suddenly cut by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). As near as I can tell in wading through the various information that has been circulated, KAIROS was mistakenly associated with a group that has an anti-Semitic stance. It appears that CIDA didn’t bother to get their information straight before cutting funding.

ODD SOCK GIVING CAMPAIGN
ODD SOCKS?
What's it all about?
Well, it's simply The Urban's new special giving campaign, an opportunity for outreach to help The Urban during the Lenten season. As we think of slowly discarding our winter socks, what better time to think about what to do with all of those 'odd socks' we all have? At The Urban we know great things often come from humble beginnings... and like odd socks, we know we can make the most out of little.
At The Urban, we are challenged daily to accept the many people from diverse circumstances who come to our doors, many from different cultures and societal backgrounds. Every day, The Urban joyfully opens its doors to all kinds of people – not to try to change them, but to love and accept them the way they are.
Our Odd Sock Campaign is a reminder to give... just as we are... and to care for others... just as they are...
During this Lenten season, as you participate in our Odd Sock Campaign, reflect on what internal work you may need to do, to be accepting of the people around you…
Starting March 14 until April 4, 2010 there will be Urban ‘laundry baskets’ circulating with your offering plates in which to drop your odd socks. Tax receipts are available for donations of $15 or more – just leave your information in your odd sock and it will be processed.
Here are some great ways to participate:
Collect your spare change (including any found in the bottom of the washing machine!) in an odd sock (clean and without holes!) from now until the end of Lent
Write a cheque and put it in an odd sock from now until the end of Lent. (Make cheques out to “The Urban”, and write 'Odd Sock' in the memo line of the cheque.)
Kick off a monthly giving plan by either direct debit or online - call or email Doreen Lecuyer for details.
Starting now until Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 there will be Urban ‘laundry baskets’ circulating with your offering plates, in which to drop your odd socks.
Tax receipts are available for donations of $15 or more – just leave your information in your odd sock and it will be processed.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE URBAN!

C.L.W.R. – WE CARE PROGRAM
Canadian Lutheran World Relief makes regular shipments of essential goods to people in need overseas. These goods are collected from caring people across Canada and are received by people who are living in adverse conditions such as refugee camps and poverty-stressed regions. It’s called the We Care program.
CLWR is careful about what it collects, in order to maximize the effectiveness of each shipment. Shipping is a costly and resource-intensive process, and involves intensive scrutiny when passing through customs, so all donated goods must meet strict standards.
CLWR does not ship promotional or religious material along with material aid. Unlike some other organizations, our aid is intended for all people in need regardless of their religion or other personal factors.
Through our We Care program, donors are asked to choose one of seven kits to assemble with a prescribed list of items. CLWR offers sturdy cotton bags in which to pack the kits; these can be ordered directly from CLWR for a suggested donation of $5 to help defray shipping costs of the finished kit to its final destination.
Perhaps you can make this a family event!
Poet’s Corner
A Prayer
Thank you God for staying by me,
Through all my decisions, problems and so
Whatever I do you’ll always see,
Whatever I think you’ll already know.
Teach me your patience, your kindness and love,
Help me to accept others the way they are.
Help me never to be mean, unfair or rough,
To forgive everyone near me or far.
Help me not to say bad things,
To protect the weak and the poor.
Help me to be ready when heavens bell rings,
To be your child, beautiful and pure.
Thank you for all your gifts to me,
For my family, my house, home and land,
For your patience when I fail to see,
And for your ever ready, steady hand.
Amen.
