Acts 1:6-14
What to Do While You Wait
Lord, is this the time…? (verse 6b)
Anybody who has ever been on a road trip with children (or even with those who are slightly older) has heard the impatient question: “Are we there yet?” We’re not too fond of things that seem to take too long to happen. In fact, most people I know are not too fond of waiting. However, in this passage from Acts, that’s exactly what the disciples are asked to do.
The Holy Spirit will come upon them (later). Jesus will come again (later). The kingdom of God will come in all its fullness (later). And so the disciples return to Jerusalem to wait.
As it turns out, those first disciples give us an excellent example of what to do while waiting: They devote themselves to prayer! They don’t know how long any of these promised events are going to take, and so they pray.
Think about this the next time you are standing in line, or stuck in traffic, or waiting for a medical appointment, or waiting to fall asleep. As impatient as you might be, consider praying. There is no better thing to do than to spend that time in the presence of God, speaking (or thinking) the prayers of your heart.
Gracious God, fill us with your Spirit, transforming our times of waiting into times of trusting you, through our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
In Christ,
Pastor Lynne Hutchison
