In August, four women from Cameroon are expected to arrive in Winnipeg. They will be guests of the MNO Synod from August 15th to October 15th. During their visit, they will get a chance to see the ministry that is happening throughout our synod, as well as receiving additional training in ministry – both lay and ordained. Two of the women are preparing for ordination, and two of them are young women who will receive additional training in preventing violence against women. Undoubtedly, they will also share their own faith and gifts for ministry with those whom they will meet.
As many of you know, women from the MNO Synod – including Kelly Speak – have visited Cameroon on previous occasions in order to share their gifts and their support and build relationships with our partners in Cameroon. Last year, Bishop Elaine Sauer and pastors Carol Janke and Katharine Bergbusch were in Cameroon for the ordination of the first Cameroonian women as pastors. During the upcoming visit here, the women preparing for ordination will learn from women who are already serving in ordained ministry here.
This is, in part, where St. Luke’s Zion comes in. I have been asked to serve as a mentor (along with others) for the women who are preparing for ordination. While all of the details are not yet worked out, it is quite likely that they will participate in things that are happening at St. Luke’s Zion while they are here. They may also accompany me on some hospital or shut-in visits. These things will happen in September or October.
In addition, members of some of the Winnipeg congregations are invited to participate in hosting these women. Should you be interested in being involved and in getting to know some sisters in Christ from “across the pond”, here are some of the possibilities:
- Home hosts are needed for the following dates:
- Aug. 15-25 (for 4 women)
- Sept. 2-6 (for 4 women)
- Sept. 9-16 (for 4 women)
- Sept. 23-25 (for 2 women)
- Sept. 25-28 (for 2 women)
- Tour guides to help show the women around our area will be needed from Aug. 16-24. If you would consider being a tour guide for an afternoon or two (including transportation), please let me know.
- An African choir is being formed that will perform on Saturday, Sept. 28th. (You do not need to be African to join!) Rehearsal dates are Sept. 4, 11 & 15. Both music & dancing will be learned!
Those of you who speak French might be particularly interested in being involved, as some of the women have limited English skills. However, they will be getting some language tutoring while they are here.
Meanwhile, please pray that these women will be granted visas in order to enter Canada. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one another as we all seek to follow Jesus.
In Christ,
Pastor Lynne Hutchison
