LUTHER VILLAGE: DID YOU KNOW…
- 4200 kilograms of garbage is GONE. Staff and volunteers got rid of old metal and lots of old furniture and a variety of other items this spring. Large garbage bins were rented in order to disperse of the items. There is still more to go…next spring?
- Thanks to Outi Vuorela for writing our 80 + page Kitchen Manual
- Thanks to God for giving us a safe (a couple times scary!) season this year…
- Thanks to Faith, Winnipeg for picking Luther Village as their Summer Ministry for June, July and August this year.
- Trees…Lots of trees. It was time to manage the danger and overgrown trees on site, so we did.

LUTHER HOME - Corporation Membership:
The 2015 Annual General Meeting of the Luther Home Corporation was held on October 25th and I would like to thank those congregation members from St. Luke’s Zion who are Corporation members, who attended. My personal experience at this particular meeting felt like a warm family reunion. It was so good to see faces from the former Christ Lutheran Church attend.
If you are interested in getting information on becoming a member of the Luther Home Corporation please contact Linda Kostiuk at 204-633-8635 (message can be left). I can provide you with a Membership Declaration form.
We are seeking individuals interested in furthering the Vision and Mission of Luther Home Corporation as a private, not-for-profit, faith-based organization.
The corporation manages a personal care home, 2 apartment buildings which include some mobility suites, a group home, and an adult day program.
As a Corporate Member you would receive regular communications and information regarding the annual general meeting, which is usually held in the afternoon of the last Sunday in October. You would be eligible to vote at the annual general meeting.
To become a Corporation Member you must be of legal age and not be a staff member of Luther Home.
There is no membership fee.
We are also recruiting Board Members. If you are interested, please submit a “letter of interest”, outlining your area of expertise, to the Nomination Committee at Luther Home, 1081 Andrews St., Wpg., MB R2V 2G9
Thank You Linda Kostiuk
N.E.S.T. NEWS:
Messiah Lutheran Church (as their 50th year Anniversary celebration project) are awaiting the arrival of a family from Iraq. This is a “Blended Visa Office Referral”, where Canada Immigration shares the financial responsibility with NEST – i.e.: 6 months each. Messiah offers the TLC as Caregivers. The family, Dad, Mom, and 3 children – daughters Maryam (11) and Melarma (4) and son Maldani (8) are expected to arrive shortly.
NEST has also confirmed that 2 sisters and their families have been successful in their long awaited interview from the Sudan, and spent the latter part in the refugee camp in Kenya. Since last reported in St. Luke’s Zion October newsletter, Canada Immigration have advised that the number of children has been revised. Rose has 7 children, ages 5 to 23 years and 1 grandchild (1 year). Her sister Betty has 4 children (1 to 7 years). There are 15 persons in all! It is expected the families will arrive in 3 to 6 months, or even a year!
They will need furniture and household furnishings, etc. As NEST has no storage facilities, we would ask that if you have any item(s) you wish to donate, and are willing to save them until their arrival, please list and let us know (phone or mailbox). We are grateful for your help. (Dorothy Hnadkamer 204-633-1494 or Jim Mair (204-632-4757).
NEST are in the process of becoming incorporated (with the Province of Manitoba) as a protection for the Executive or individual members re: any financial responsibility that may occur, and also for the name! There is an initial fee of $120.00, then an annual return of $25.00.
We are also considering the use of Police Record Checks for the Care Givers. We are referring to the policy of Grace Lutheran Church, who follow the “ELCIC Policy for Protection of Children, Youth and other Vulnerable People and Model Documents”. Guidelines will be discussed at our next regular meeting, and be done in a manner that will no way discourage Care Givers.
The Abundant Life Lutheran Church held a “Coffee House” evening event on October 30th with live music, food and pumpkin auction, etc. Tickets were $10.00 and the proceeds going to CLWR in support of Refugee’s.
NEST Upcoming Events:
Fundraisers:
- Potluck Dinner - St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of Narol, (Esther Juice & Howard Engel). February 2016. More information to come.
- Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast (on Regent St.)
Saturday, March 26th, 2016 – Mr. Mair tried to change the date as this is Easter weekend, but was informed that there are no other available dates. Tickets will be available in January.
- St. Mark’s Lutheran Church are planning a Potluck Dinner. More information to come.
- Other Ideas ??? We are always open to Fundraising suggestions or offers!
The next regular NEST meeting is Tues., Nov. 24th
at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.
ALL Welcome! Refreshments follow.
There is speculation (and hope) that our new Federal Government will reinstate interim federal health benefits for all refugee’s.
Thank You for your prayerful and financial support.
-Blessings always! Dorothy Handkamer
