Handi Transit:

Does it bother you that people who use Handi Transit can’t get a ride to St. Luke’s Zion?  If it does, consider making it an election issue with your city councillor.  Handi Transit’s policies are set by city council.  Currently, their policy does not allow them to take anybody beyond the bus routes.  However, previously they were bringing people to St. Luke’s Zion.

Consider asking your city councillor (or others running in the election) about changing the policy so that Handi Transit could cover both the transit routes and within the city limits.  That way it could include St. Luke’s Zion as well.  Just a thought…

Bible Conversations:

Wednesdays at noon – beginning Wed. Sept. 17th.  From what I understand, many people find the whole idea of Bible study to be a rather frightening thought:  Will I have to read out loud?  Will there be homework?  What if I don’t know enough and look stupid?

If any of these things reflect your thoughts, do not be afraid.  When you come to Bible conversations, you will not be forced to read out loud if you don’t want to.  You will not have homework unless there are things that you want to look up on your own.  And nobody else is coming just to find out how much you either know or don’t know.  In fact, we’re all coming to deepen our faith – to discuss what we read in the Bible, to ask questions, and to learn from one another.

And so, all are invited.  Wednesdays at noon, beginning Wed. Sept. 17th.  Bring a bag lunch and join the conversation!

                        --Pastor Lynne

YOUTH:  Looking ahead to fall:

*Luther Village Annual Thanksgiving Retreat: Registration & fees are due by September 21st.

Space is limited therefore if you know for sure either way if you are coming or not please let Lisa know as soon as possible.

*September 28 – MNO Synod Post Gathering Event

NEST:

There have been no new arrivals this year.  NEST coordinator Jim Mair continues to make inquiries through Canada Immigration.  There has been word that refugees who have been served through the Pretoria office will now be processed through Nairobi, which has a long back-log and varies (strangely) from 815 to 2000 on the waiting list.

NEST PICNIC, held on July 19th, at Hyland Park (off Henderson Hwy.) was enjoyed by 30-35 recent refugees, members & friends.  As always the favourite game with water filled balloons was a “hit”!  It was a lovely day and a great “ethnic” pot-luck lunch was shared.

With the closing of Christ Lutheran Church, their congregational representatives Ethel & Jim Mair and Howard Engel have been nominated as board members (independent of church membership).  As well, Alem Asghedom, (Christ Church), whose initial term as a board member had expired, was once again nominated. (NEST meetings in June & August).

NEST Chair, Pastor Annemarie MacIntosh read a beautiful letter from ‘Kathy’ (Christ Lutheran Church) acknowledging the faithfulness of NEST in helping to secure safe and happy homes for ‘New Canadians’.  NEST received a generous gift of $30,000.00 from the Church, which will go towards reducing our liabilities for future arrivals.  We return our warmest “Thanks!” in a letter from the Board, asking our Lord’s blessings as its members find new church homes.

*Next General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 7:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church. Refreshments follow.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

*NEST upcoming Fundraising Concert: Please note the change in date, time and place

for our upcoming fundraiser: the ‘WINNIPEG STEEL ORCHESTRA’.  The concert will take place at Grace Lutheran Church located at 211 Kimberley Avenue on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.  General admission is $20.00 per ticket.  Fair trade items will be available for purchase.

The Orchestra was founded in 1972 to play Caribbean music (largely from Trinidad & Tobago). Their instruments are all made from steel drums but are correctly called ‘steel pans’. Each has a different voice, eg. soprano, tenor, guitar etc. The orchestra does full concerts

(2 halves & an intermission). They do fundraising for others and themselves.

This concert is a joint fundraiser and we will share a 50/50 split, after expenses. (The orchestra’s portion is for Medical assistance for Jamaica).

The performers are a ‘United Nations’ aged 10 – 84. There will be 15 to 20 members playing. (they number as many as 40 members), providing a variety of music eg. popular, classical & cultural. They invite people to look at their instruments and ask questions following the concert.

For tickets see Dorothy Handkamer; and as well at the door.

*A Fundraiser at Applebee’s Restaurant (breakfast) is being considered for January 2015.

*NEST has been making presentations to welcome new Churches for membership and support. We are also open to fundraising ideas…always!
