Animate: A different kind of study
Beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 18th, we will begin the “Animate” study of faith. Animate is for all those who have asked lots of questions: about church, about religion, about the cross, and even about God. Why read the Bible over and over again? Why did Jesus need to die on the cross? Does God really love some people and hate others? What does it mean to be saved?
Come prepared to have some good discussion and to hear from some people who have their own unique perspectives on faith and the church. Topics include God, Religion, Jesus, Salvation, Cross, Bible, and Church. Each session includes a DVD presentation and plenty to discuss. There is a Journal that goes with this course, so if you would like to order one, please let Pastor Lynne know.
Come from noon to 1:30 pm on Wednesdays, and bring a bag lunch. This course will last until the end of October.
The Saturday Bible study on the Parables will resume on Saturday, September 14th.

We have a unique opportunity that has just arrived for LutherVillage. Esme Boone, from Kenora, Ontario, is a harpist, and will be leading a workshop on Celtic harp making this upcoming Fall. I have had the opportunity to try out her harp: it is a lovely, portable, lap-sitting Celtic harp that you get to personalize as you craft it.
The discounted cost she is offering each person is $200, + a small fee for LutherVillage for accommodations and meals, for a total of $300. If you are interested, please register by September 15. Space is limited as the harp kits need to be ordered. Email kim@luthervillage.ca or call 204-898-4052.

NEWS FROM N.E.S.T.
It has been a summer of events for NEST.
In May, Nora R., who arrived in 1989, with her husband, Antonio Q. and their young family, escaping the civil war in El Salvador, has finally been able to “welcome” her mother, 83 year old Susana “home”! Her mother, who had no other family support, had been living in Costa Rica. It took 7 years of applications, letters, and interviews! Much happiness when Susana was granted a Permanent Resident Card when she landed in Canada! NEST and friends were able to meet and welcome Susana at the NEST picnic.
The picnic, on a hot July 13th, was enjoyed by “refugee” friends, members and the hosts, the Winnipeg Beach United Church. About 70 in all shared in the pot-luck lunch, fun & games. Transportation was by bus & private cars.
The sponsorship of the R. family from Columbia, Mary and her 2 sons and a daughter, has been completed. Financial support was provided by Immigration Canada, and the TLC by NEST. Application has been made for her husband, who had been reported “missing” at the time, and it was initially rejected. A successful appeal has now been granted. The family are being helped with the legal expenses by private members & friends.
The K. family from the Congo – the mother Kahindisa and her 3 teen children and 3 young relatives have had their medicals & interviews in the refugee camp in Burundi. They will hopefully arrive before Christmas! The request had been made by the Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, whose members are also offering financial support, to assist the NEST portion. Caregivers will be needed. (They will be helped by NEST members).
The fundraising Pot Luck lunch hosted by the Grace Lutheran Church on August 18th was attended by some 60 very well fed people; there was a great array of food. Entertainment following was from Linda Lurvey’s “Good Neighbor Recorder Group” easy listening music from various recorders, violin and drum and a small harp! The lunch netted approximately $665.00.
Fundraising Events being discussed are:
1) Breakfast at Applebee’s – a Saturday in early November, (can accommodate 150).
2) Steel Drum Band Concert – location to be decided.
3) Have you any ideas or possibilities?
Thank you always for your prayers and support.
Next General Meeting will be held on September 24th, 2013 @ 7:00 p.m. at GraceLutheranChurch on Kimberley.
