BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY (B2CS)

 Perspective, it seems, is everything.

We celebrated Back to Church Sunday on October 21st this year, and some were disappointed. The church wasn’t full, and so it seemed like a failure. Yet, that is not the whole picture. One of the key premises behind Back to Church Sunday is that success is to be found in actually extending the invitation – regardless of whether the person invited says yes or no. And so, to every one of you who prayed and who had the courage to invite, thank you!

The other thing to note is that it was not, in fact, a failure. The first time that we celebrated Back to Church Sunday, there were zero visitors that Sunday. This time, there were at least 10. As people come on board and get used to the idea, each year will be better.

However, the other thing to note is that more of you have been inviting people to church, period! You do not have to wait for B2CS to invite. Any time is just fine. Meanwhile, we continue to learn how to become a more inviting church.

NEWS FROM N.E.S.T.
ARRIVALS:
HTOO EH is originally from (Burma) Myanmar, living in a refugee camp in Northern Thailand. This young man is the eldest son of LAYTHAR SAR who came to Winnipeg in 2007 with her other children under urgent blended sponsorship by NEST and Canada Immigration. HTOO EH is a “family linked” sponsorship approved by NEST in October 2010. He arrived September 4, 2012 and was happily re-united with his family – all together now! He was also met by Board Members, the Pastor and members of LAY SAR’S home BAPTISTCHURCH. We welcomed the family at our Pot Luck supper on Sunday and following the meal we enjoyed several hymns sung in Burmese.
CLAUDE NSENGIYUMA (22) also arrived in September, originally from the Congo. He was met by his close friend ERICK NOVWIMANA also from the Congo, who has lived in Winnipeg for about 12 years now and is sponsoring Claude. This is a “family linked” sponsorship. NEST submitted the application in October 2008. Claude speaks English, French, his native tongue and some Spanish! Erick tells us that when he was young, Claude’s mother “looked after him”.
Now he has been able to welcome and help his friends. We enjoyed getting to know them at our September meeting.

OCTOBER POT LUCK SUPPER:
The AbundantLifeLutheranChurch members were our gracious hosts. The ethnic food was great and the Burmese Choir a delight. The speaker was a student representative from the “Oral History Centre” of the University of Winnipeg. Her presentation focused on their hopes of finding out about the lives and experiences of refugees now living in Winnipeg. The supper raised approximately $700.00 for NEST.

Thank You to all who contributed to and supported the event!

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae

 SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
The Sunday School will be making advent wreaths on Sunday, November 25th after church. If you are planning to come please let Betty Gunn know. There will be a sign up sheet on the downstairs bulletin board.
Also if anyone has any old 4 litre ice cream pails that we may have to use that would be wonderful. We use them to mix the Plaster of Paris and then just throw them out after because they are hard to clean. Thank you!

Pictures & Stories from THE HOLYLAND
On Sunday, November 18th, we will have a pot-luck lunch following worship. Once people have had a chance to eat, Pastor Lynne will be sharing some pictures and stories from the Holy Land. Please set aside this date, and invite some friends to come with you!

URBAN UPDATE
The Urban will be holding it's Christmas store this year, if you have anything used, gently used or new to donate it would be greatly appreciated. Also we are in need of socks and slippers for our people so we can keep the floors clean at our church.     Please call before coming to ensure that either Sandy, Leslie or Rhonda is at the church to accept your donations. Number is 204-774-3143 Many thanks, Rhonda Gates

NOVEMBER YOUTH & CAMPUS SERVICE
will take place on Sunday, November 4th, 6:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk. The church is located at # 6088 on Highway 9A, just south of the Rolling Mills. The service is being structured to be a bit of a post-Gathering reunion, but of course, it is open to all. So why not wear your MNO Hyperlink t-shirt, if you have one?  (*There were a few things that were left behind when the buses returned from Saskatoon - sleeping bags, shirts, water bottles, etc. that will be brought to this service. Whatever is not claimed will be given to the Salvation Army following that service)
